HeroQuest is a beloved classic board game full of nostalgia and dungeon-crawling charm. I joined the project as part of the digital team working on the Companion App, which brings the tabletop experience into a guided digital format.
Summary
My focus was on translating the physical quest books into clean, step-by-step digital layouts, ensuring each mission felt intuitive and visually cohesive. I also stepped in for illustration needs—recreating missing art assets to stay true to the original style—and helped get everything polished and production-ready.
Challenge
The main challenge was balancing fidelity to the source material while optimizing it for an interactive, screen-based experience. Every quest needed to be carefully adapted without losing its analog heart. Some original art assets were incomplete or missing, which meant rebuilding them in a way that felt seamless within the world of HeroQuest.
Solutions
I started by breaking down each quest into digestible digital steps—thinking about how players would naturally move through the story. I designed layouts that stayed true to the original book’s pacing, while making it easier to follow on screen. When assets were missing, I stepped in with illustrations that blended into the existing style, staying playful and respectful to the original world. I also made sure all my files were dev-ready, with every little detail buttoned up for a smooth handoff.
Outcome
Seeing the final product carry the feel of the physical game while being so easy to navigate digitally was really fulfilling. I got to flex both my technical and creative muscles—solving design puzzles, drawing where needed, and helping preserve the magic of a game so many people love. It was a special kind of project that reminded me why I love doing this kind of work.
